ビートルズの英国での7枚目にあたるオリジナルアルバム「リボルバー 」の10曲目に収録されたバラードナンバー。作者のポールがリード・ヴォーカルをとっている。ジョンとジョージはこの曲には参加していない。
前アルバム「ラバー・ソウル
この曲は1966年5月9日、アビイ・ロード第2スタジオにて録音が開始された。
まず、ピアノ（ポール）とドラム（リンゴ）のみで10テイク録音。
最も出来がよかったとされる第10テイクにポールによるクラヴィコード、リンゴのタンバリンをオーバーダブする。
そして1966年5月16日にポールのヴォーカルをオーバーダブ。
録音する際にテープ速度を若干遅くして録音された。
1966年5月19日。アビイ・ロード第3スタジオで間奏部分のフレンチ・ホルンをオーバーダブ。
フレンチ・ホルンをプレイしたのはアラン・シヴィル。
当時フィルハーモニア管弦楽団の主席ホルン奏者だったアランは、このセッションがこの日の3つ目の仕事だった。
ビートルズはこの日、第一スタジオにて「ペイパーバック・ライター」と「レイン」のプロモーションビデオを撮影していた。

- ポールはこの曲をスイスで休暇中に、滞在先のバスルームで書いたそうだ。（スキーに出かけてた）
仮の題名は「Why did it Die（なぜそれは死んだのか？)」だったそうな。 - 1984年の映画「ヤァ！ブロードストリート」でポールは6曲のビートルズナンバーを（スタジオ作品としては）初リメイクしているが、この曲も取り上げられている。
アレンジはアコースティック・ギターと弦楽4重奏（「イエスタデイ」と同じ）+フレンチホルンに変更されている。
映画の中ではBBCのスタジオで歌われて、その後にすぐ「エリナｰ・リグビー」も演奏された。
